Depending on your insert, the case will have either a full rubber boot or a thin liner gasket that creates a watertight seal between the top and bottom of the case. The front of the case has an o-ring next to the locking mechanism that creates a watertight seal that allows for a small amount of air to pass through and equalize pressure between the inside and outside of the case to account for atmospheric pressure variance.

There are a couple of factors that can make the boxes a little tricky to open upon arrival. First, please verify that the bar on the locking mechanism is turned vertically - you can use your hand to twist it counter-clockwise. Secondly, Please be aware that the latching assembly is a single piece that covers almost the entire width of the front of the case. It can certainly be a little confusing if you're not used to it. Thirdly, atmospheric pressure changes between our warehouse, in transit, and the final destination can create a vacuum seal effect. The first time you open the case, can require a little more effort to pry the latch mechanism up and "pop" this seal. Our Micro EDC cases have a three-stage locking system: First, the hinge itself snaps closed. engaging the front hinge in this way makes the case waterproof. Secondly, you can twist the lock clockwise to engage it, preventing the case from opening accidentally. Finally, the key can be used to turn the locking mechanism an additional 90 degrees and prevent it from being opened by twisting the thumb+finger dial.
